$16 million of funding is now available for Elk Valley Fish Habitat Conservation – projects focused on the conservation and protection of fish or fish habitat, or the restoration of fish habitat in the Elk Valley, within Qukin ʔamakʔis, and the immediate downstream area within Canada.
This funding stems from an environmental infraction by Teck Coal Ltd. that occurred in the Elk Valley, situated within Qukin ʔamakʔis, part of ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa (Ktunaxa homeland). The process for allocating the funds has been collaboratively developed with the Ktunaxa Nation, emphasizing ʔakxamis q̓api qapsin (all living things), interconnectivity, and an ecosystem-based approach.

Letters of Intent (LOIs) will be jointly reviewed by Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Ktunaxa Nation. Interested parties can access comprehensive information on eligibility, fund use requirements, application procedures, and the Qukin ʔamakʔis Applicant Guide on the Environmental Damages Fund (EDF) website.
Additionally, applicants interested in networking with potential partners can utilize the EDF Teck Coal Penalty Virtual Forum. Users must agree to the Forum’s Terms and Conditions.
The extended deadline for submitting LOIs under the Qukin ʔamakʔis Call for Applications is July 24, 2025, at 12:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). Applications must be submitted through the online Grants and Contributions Enterprise Management System (GCEMS).
For inquiries related to the application process, contact the West and North EDF office at: [email protected].
